Careful what you wish for, Mr Hikikomori… Wives leave and take half all the time.
I have to disagree with Colonel Wakkybagz’s novelty song criteria. Would the Colonel consider artists such as Frank Zappa or Tom Waits novelty musicians just because some of their songs are intended to be humorous?
I don’t claim to be any authority on novelty music (nor a Colonel of any sort), I just feel like that definition might be too general.
Love the podcast, by the way.
I wouldn’t classify anyone as a novely musician simply because *some* of their songs are intended to be funny, but you bring up a good point. Maybe dry-funny is excluded, as opposed to silly humor? Also, an otherwise straight up rocker can also have novelty songs (many Kinks songs could qualify as novelty songs, for instance).
Zappa is probably unique in that he had a long career, wrote a lot of jokey songs and concept albums. I would say on the continuum he’s as close as you can get to being a novelty artist without being one.
Gags would obviously say that Tom Waits and Frank Zappa are novelty artists.
